Researchers have begun exploring uses for generative AI in analyzing qualitative data in hopes of improving efficiency of data analysis and exploring new ways of handling large volumes of data. However, what “using AI” looks like varies for each project and researchers need to make their own decisions about whether using generative AI is appropriate. Researchers who choose to use AI also need to develop analysis plans that fit the data, methodology, and expected audiences for their own work.

In this workshop we’ll explore specific approaches to using generative AI in qualitative research, and identify elements of your research context that will shape your own decision-making and planning process.

By the end of the workshop, we will equip you with the knowledge to:
1) Describe at least two methodological strategies that use generative AI for analyzing qualitative data.
2) Identify which tools are used for analyzing qualitative data with AI and which tools may be appropriate and accessible to you.
3) Assess the ethical implications of AI use in your research, particularly for research with human subjects.
4) Identify AI use policies and practices relevant to your research project.

This workshop is taught in collaboration with staff from Research Integrity and Misconduct (Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation).
